About the Role



The Relay Technician II performs protective relay testing, commissioning, and maintenance in electrical substations under minimal supervision. This role involves relay calibration, troubleshooting, and system protection analysis using industry-standard relay test equipment.



Responsibilities



  • Safety Leadership – Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, and NERC standards.
  • Protective Relay Testing & Commissioning – Install, test, and maintain electromechanical, microprocessor-based, and digital relays.
  • Substation Control Circuit Testing – Perform function testing on relay panels, transformers, and circuit breakers.
  • Relay Logic & Coordination – Develop relay macros, testing routines, and fault analysis for system protection.
  • End-to-End Relay Testing – Utilize Omicron, Doble, and Megger test sets for fault simulation and system validation.
  • SCADA & Communication Systems – Install and test GOOSE, Modbus, Fiber, and IEC 61850 protocols.
  • Power System Analysis – Conduct circuit analysis, relay coordination studies, and fault investigations.


Qualifications



  • Required Skills & Experience


  • Hands-on experience with protective relays in transmission, generation, or distribution substations.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in distribution and transmission control circuits.
  • Proficiency in relay test software (RTS, Test Universe, Enoserv, etc.).
  • Ability to travel and work overtime as needed.


Preferred Skills & Certifications


  • NETA II Certification (Preferred).
  • Bachelor's or Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or Military Experience.
  • Experience with circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, and substation automation.
